My One Millionth Twitter Follower

groningenMy one millionth follower and I will meet for a day in Groningen, Holland. I live in Brooklyn, and the chances of my one millionth follower living in Groningen are small, so we will be flown there by an as-yet-unnamed sponsor.

I choose Groningen for this important meeting because I lived there for a year (1992 – 1993) as part of a study abroad program, and it has sentimental value for me, which makes going there easy to imagine. It will also provide a great backdrop for all the fun things that my one millionth follower and I will do, a setting for all the important topics that we will discuss.

My one millionth follower and I will stroll down the cobblestone street alongside the canal, hand in hand. We’ll stop and lean on a rail, and share a cigarette (I no longer smoke, but this will be a special occasion). We’ll gaze wistfully at the water, the small houseboats, the fit, happy people pedaling by on their single-gear bicycles.

“Oh, Em-em,” I will say, having developed that nickname for my one millionth follower (1MM) earlier in the day, “how far we’ve come.”

And my one millionth follower will turn to me, hair blown back, skin glowing, eyes shining in the reflection of a nearby street lamp, just as dusk is starting to fall.

“How far indeed,” my one millionth follower will say.

With kind regard to my friends, Ashton and Larry.

What if Em-em is @darthvader? Does the kid have to smoke through the helmet?
