Online Self-Promotion 101

I know a lot of talented writers who spend most of their time creating, and are not particularly followers of, or even interested in, the world of social media. Once in a while, one of these talented offline people will get something published online. Galvanized by the idea that more pageviews is better, they clumsily attempt to make their content popular by sending emails to their friends, asking them to read it. Maybe they also instant message another set of friends, asking people in their life, one at a time, to patronize the site in question. This process is tedious, labor-intensive, and makes the person doing it feel like he or she is selling used cars. No one with a conscience or a desire to keep their friends can do it for very long. So they stop. Read the rest of this entry »

Memories Of V

Marc Singer as Donovan, the reporter-warrior of the original V.

Marc Singer as Donovan, the reporter-warrior of the original V.

Tonight is the premiere of the ABC science fiction series V, which is a reboot of the NBC franchise that ran, in some form or another, from 1983 to 1985.

The 12-to-14 year-old me loved the original show, which I now recognize as, most likely, being pretty horrible, even without having to go back and re-watch it, which I admit I haven’t done. I also read the novel by A.C. Crispin, which was, I guess, was written for people who didn’t have a TV, or perhaps just those who wanted the alien-human sex scenes laid out a bit more explicitly. (Somehow, this was done in such a way that it remained unclear as to exactly how it worked.) Read the rest of this entry »

Losing To Win: The Open Web Awards

Mashable opened nominations today for their Open Web Awards. The phrase “open web” indicates that this is basically a popularity contest, like the People’s Choice awards. Nominations extend through November 15th, at which point the people, sites, and applications with the most votes in each category will compete (again, for popular votes) to win the awards.

So, I nominated Revolving Floor, the small but promising site of which I’m publisher, for the “best online magazine award.” And if you’re involved in the promotion of any online entity, including yourself, you should act similarly.

To be clear: Revolving Floor has no chance of winning the award. It just doesn’t have the audience of hundreds of thousands that sites like Epicurious have.

But that doesn’t matter. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s tough to compete with ease of use…

I bought a season pass to watch Mad Men on iTunes. But, with my Mac out of commission, and my only working computer my EEE netbook, I’m finding that playing video with iTunes open, even if it’s the only program running, is still too intense for the processor and/or RAM. It buffers, even though the entire thing has already dfownoaded. Read the rest of this entry »

Revolving Floor masthead

Revolving Floor, a new site of which I am publisher, launched two days ago.

Revolving Floor is, among other things:

  • A magazine that publishes original art in various genres, including personal essays, cartoons, poetry, one-act plays, short stories, digital illustrations, and acrobatic guerilla performance videos.
  • A curated community blog.
  • A public forum for discussion of issues related to the work that we publish.
  • A platform for established artists to try out new work, of which they retain ownership (RF buys only first publication rights, like a print magazine).
  • A permanent, sponsor-friendly hub that generates a variety of original, quality content around a different topic, every single month. Read the rest of this entry »
