A couple of ways that RF, and my attitudes towards it, have evolved since it started in August 2009:
I’m not as concerned with deadlines as I used to be. When I started RF, I was thinking in terms of the social media “hubs” that I’ve produced in the corporate world. In such cases, the site is typically part of an advertising campaign with a goal, a budget, and a timeline. The audience needs to be both earned and converted (for lack of a better word) within a few months. I couldn’t tell a client: “It’s true that only 500 people came this month, but don’t worry, they loved it, and we got one link from an influential site that I have a lot of respect for. We’re building a brand, and it will eventually pay off.” Read the rest of this entry »
My own latest essay is up on Revolving Floor, of which I am also the publisher. The piece is about test-taking, bureaucracy, work vs. school, the passage of time, and… well, check it out.
Revolving Floor now has an “I liked this” voting system, for those who want to show support of a particular piece, but are not inclined to leave a comment. Just go to the Revolving Floor home page, find the piece you like, and click on the little heart. Before long, you’ll be able to vote in similar fashion from the permalink pages.

Revolving Floor, a new site of which I am publisher, launched two days ago.
Revolving Floor is, among other things:
A magazine that publishes original art in various genres, including personal essays, cartoons, poetry, one-act plays, short stories, digital illustrations, and acrobatic guerilla performance videos.
A curated community blog.
A public forum for discussion of issues related to the work that we publish.
A platform for established artists to try out new work, of which they retain ownership (RF buys only first publication rights, like a print magazine).

I’ve posted a few times now about the project that I was originally calling “The Witty People Community.” Well, it’s for real. An active discussion has been going on in a private google group among the founding members about how to handle various issues. Here is my latest manifesto:
Revolving Floor is a curated community blog, publishing related submissions from excellent writers, cartoonists, performers, and other artists. It is also a permanent conversational hub, engineered to work with sponsors interested in playing a part in the social media arena, without having to build their contribution from scratch.
Every month, the varied talents of Revolving Floor will create contributions related to a given theme. If the theme is sponsored, then the sponsor gets the credibility of facilitating about 30 pieces of original and widely seen creative works. If the theme is not sponsored, then the contributors benefit from mixing their audiences, and from the confidence in a persistent platform for giving exposure to their latest pieces.
The topic for the first month, scheduled to be July, is “How do you like your eggs?”
